A bucket-list race in the mountains of North Georgia, the 36-mile gravel grinder explores pockets of the Appalachian foothills steeped in U.S. history. At the base of Currahee Mountain sits Camp Toccoa, where American paratroopers trained for WW2 air raids. (That camp, and this mountain, is featured in the movie Band of Brothers; you’ll climb the road filmed in the opening scene.) Starting from a historic train depot in Cornelia, you’ll hammer a mix of single track and gravel roads that pass some of the oldest cemeteries in Georgia. After the finish-line beer garden, you’ll feast on a gourmet post-race meal and beer provided by Terrapin.
Distance: 36 miles (out and back)
Elevation gain: 4,000 feet
“The slopes and pitches of Mt Currahee are as beautiful as they are challenging; pushing both racers and soldiers to emerge fitter, faster, and tougher. The history and scenery of the Georgia wilds make an epic journey out of a day on the bike.”
